  He was blind in the right eye since age 5. CJ and his father, Claude, were skidding logs out of the timber when a log got hung up on a rock sticking out of the ground (know as a devil's thumb). His father, Claude, hit the rock with a mall knocking off a chip of rock that hit CJ in the right eye. CJ was a communications expert in the U.S. Army and later for the U.S. State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency. CJ adopted his first wife's two children in order to take them with him to foreign embassies where he was stationed. CJ retired in the Portland area. Before his death, he wrote his auto-biography.
